Common GST Registration Issues

About 1 crore businesses in India have GST registration. GST registration can be obtained from Expert Support or you can do it yourself from the government’s GST portal. In this blog, we’ll look at some of the problems faced by many taxpayers, along with solutions. 

No Provisional ID

Problem: You do not have a Provisional ID or username to start the GST registration process.  Solution: All taxpayers applying for a new GST registration must first provide their name, company name, PAN, email, and mobile number to begin the registration process. The  GST registration process begins at https://reg.gst.gov.in/registration/. After entering the above information, an OTP will be sent to your email ID and mobile number for confirmation. Upon successful completion, you will be provided with a temporary reference number to start the GST registration process. 

If you are a  GST non-resident taxpayer and do not have an Indian mobile phone number to receive OTP, please use the mobile phone number of the approved signer. All non-resident taxpayers must appoint an Indian person to act as an approved signer.

Provisional ID Cancelled(Applies Only to GST Migrations) 

Problem: Your RC or Provisional ID has been canceled. If you are migrating from  VAT or service tax registration to GST, you must follow the process to complete the GST migration. If you do not file a service tax or VAT return for an extended period of time during the GST transition, your GST registration may have been canceled. In such cases, you will need to access your nearest GST Seva Kendra,  request the assistance of a GST officer, and manually transfer your provisional ID to GSTIN. 

Unable to Select Range Code

Problem: No Range Code available

During the GST registration process, you will need to select the appropriate GST jurisdiction based on the area code. In some cases, the area code drop-down list did not appear. If this happens, make sure your browser is compatible with the GST portal. The GST portal is best viewed in  Internet Explorer 10+ or later, Google Chrome 49+ or later, Firefox 45+ or later, and Safari 6+ or later with a resolution of 1024×768. At low resolutions, the above issues can occur. Try refreshing the page or accessing the GST registration application form another computer.

Digital Signature Error 

Common GST Registration Issues

Problem: There is a problem with the digital signature required for GST registration.  

Solution: Digital signatures are required for the following types of GST enrollment applicants: 

Public Limited Company

Private Limited Company

Unlimited Company

Foreign Company

Limited Liability Partnership (LLP)

Foreign Limited Liability Partnership

Public Sector Undertaking

Therefore, before you start the GST registration process, make sure you have a Class 2 or Class 3 digital signature of the approved signer. Once you receive your digital signature, you will need to install emSigner and register your DSC with the GST portal. You can download emSigner from the following link. 

After installing and initializing emSigner, you need to register the DSC with the GST portal by following the steps below. Then retry the GST registration process to resolve the issue.

Step 1: Log in to GST Portal

Login to the GST Portal using the temporary reference number and select My Profile.

Step 2: Register DSC

Select Register or Update DSC on the My Profile page.

Step 3: Select PAN

Select PAN of the authorized signatory for whom DSC was earlier obtained.

Step 4: Select DSC Certificate

Select the DSC certificate of the authorized signatory from emSigner.

Step 5: DSC Registered

On submission, DSC would be registered, if the steps above are followed.

PAN Details are Incorrect 

Problem: Incorrect PAN details.  Solution: When registering for GST, you will need to provide a PAN for authorized signers and promoters. The PAN details provided on the GST gateway must match the PAN database. The data sent to the GST portal is immediately checked against the PAN database. Therefore, in the event of a discrepancy, the request will not be able to proceed. If your PAN contains incorrect information and you want to insert the correct data into your GST  application, you will need to modify your PAN data first. 

GST Registration Certificate not Received

If you still have not received your GST registration certificate after about 5-10 days from the date of application, check if the GST agent has asked the question on the GST portal by visiting the Temporary reference number. time.
